I have a chilton manual which says the AC must be discharged as a first step, but elsewhere online I've seen DIYs that don't mention...The heater core in my 2001 F-150 4.6L 122K miles began the classic symptoms this weekend. I cut and bypassed the heater hoses using some brass pipe and a couple of hose clamps. Wish I didn't have to replace but I'm near Fort Worth, TX and it does get cold here sometimes.
