Problem is the bore as you know is so small and the pistons are 4 ring truck pistons (heavy,low compression). In my 427 I have a 366 forged crank. You do need to have it balanced if you don't use forged pistons. 366 heads, depending on which castings, aren't the greatest.The 396 and 402 are the same block, so yes they will fit. My recently purchased 1968 396 Chevelle is using a bit of oil. I figured I'd have to get the engine rebuilt. I did a compression test yesterday (engine hot, all plugs removed, throttle wide open). 2 cyclinders were between 165-170 PSI. All others were around 180.Since Chevy had spent a few dollars promoting the 396 in the 60's, the 402 was still called "396" from 1970 to 1972 and was installed in cars like SS Camaros, SS Chevelles, SS Novas and yes, trucks as 396's were in the 60's.
