Nov 18, 2009. #1/5. Hello... I recently got my hands on my family Marlin Golden 39A. I was told it was my Great Grandfathers and has been passed down a few times. I would like to know how old it is but I don't know where to find such information. The serial number is 388134. It is a lever action .22.It's a 1946 Marlin 39a, with a small 'c' serial number. It has the expected roll-mark: "The Marlin Firearms Co -- Model 39-A NEW HAVEN, CONN, USA -- .22 S L & LR" ... This is because the lower tang is removable and can not be classified as a firearm reciever. The S/N on my 1948 Marlin 336 is on the lower tang, btw. This is because the lower tang is removable and can not be classified as a firearm reciever. The S/N on my 1948 Marlin 336 is on the lower tang, btw. I don't see why ATF would be upset with you covering the S/N with a sight.
